What is a search engine and why is it important? More than likely if you're not familiar with the term search engine it is because you didn't know what it was actually called. Everyone who navigates aound the web using search engines; common names people know are Altavista, Excite, HotBot, Lycos, and so on. You may ask why Google and Yahoo weren't mentioned in that list? That is because they are actually directories and not search engines. They function much the same way, but are not totally identical.

A search engine is the main tool that allows people to locate information on the World Wide Web. Some "bots" only look through things called meta-tags, others now look through an entire web sites content.
